The Gay Word is coming

On Saturday 17 October, Amy Ashenden will be screening her documentary at The Glorious Art House, along with a Q&A. The Gay Word focuses on the recent trend of using the word ‘gay’ negatively to mean things are bad, ‘uncool’ or embarrassing.

In Britain, 99% of young lesbian, gay and bisexual people hear the word ‘gay’ being used negatively at school and 84% feel distressed when they hear used in that context. Yet almost half of all 18 – 29 year olds believe it is okay to use the term. Is it homophobic, or just an evolution in language? Ashenden investigates this divide in opinion.

A University of Southampton graduate and freelance journalist for Guardian, she travelled the South East of England. Interviewing gay and straight, young and old people, Ashenden examines this topic. She spoke to a range of people, from academics to gay rights activists to students still in school to find the origin of this trend.

The premier screening at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in London sold out with local MP David Lammy attending, and Stonewall (Europe’s largest gay rights organisation) joining Ashenden for a Q&A panel.

The event will be raising money for the local LGBT charity X-Plore, a support group for young people. With its immensely positive feedback, and its accessibility for both LGBTQ+ and heterosexual audiences amongst the praise, this is something to keep in your calendars.
