Barry Manilow’s musical “Copacabana” is coming to Exeter this month.

The show, based on one of the American singer’s most famous hits, is being staged by the University’s Footlights theatre company at the Exeter Northcott Theatre.

Set in 1940’s New York, the musical is the story of a small town girl. And guess what? ‘Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl’. We follow Lola and aspiring song writer Tony Forte in a tale of romance (showgirls!) and passion.

As well as the iconic title number, the show produced by Anita Copley and Kath Darke features tunes such as “Dancin’ Fool “and “Ay Carramba!”. In all there are 22 songs for a cast honed by choreographer Chloe Young and vocal coach Stephanie Lyse, with the orchestra being led by Musical Director Joshua Clarke.

Assistant producer Kath Darke has said that “the show appeals to both students and the Exeter community. We are making sure to stay true to the era which people remember so fondly, but also aim to make is accessible to a different generation.”

Support for the Manilow themed show is already growing, with local bar 44 Below selling an exclusive “Copacabana” cocktail ahead of the launch. Lead sponsor The Old Firehouse is also getting involved through launch nights and preview showcases, whilst the cast and creative team celebrated the ticket release and the start of ‘Copa Fever’ on campus, with preview performances at the Forum and Princesshay shopping centre.

Jess Phillips and Cam Jones make their Footlights debut in the lead roles of Lola and Tony. “I’ve auditioned for Footlights since first year and so to get a lead part in the show was unexpected to say the least!” commented leading lady Jess Phillips, who recently displayed her star quality in performing a number from the show to a mesmerised crowd at the University’s Children in Need event.

“Copacabana” will run as part of the Northcott Spring season from January 23rd-26th with ticket prices ranging from £10-£16.50 with discounted concession prices on offer. They are available now from the Exeter Northcott Box Office.

Oddly enough, the show itself already has South West roots, having made its UK premiere at The Theatre Royal, Plymouth in 1994 which was attended by Barry Manilow himself! Manilow has also been invited to attend the production as well as previous Footlights star, Will Young who starred in previous Footlights show, Oklahoma.

This time, Director Ed Johnson aims to keep “Copacabana” up there in the stream of recent University successes which landed Exeter the title of “University of the Year” by the Sunday Times. Johnson says “we will remain true to the show’s glamorous origins, but will be looking to give it an exciting new vibrancy.”
