30 lucky artists were recently given the opportunity to try out 3D printing by The University of Exeter’s Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing (CALM) and Exeter Phoenix… Neoreplicants, a new FREE exhibition at Phoenix Gallery, showcases the artwork created using this incredible technology.
3D printing involves design using computer modelling software, and then printing through a process of laser sintering – whereby granules of a densely packed nylon powder material are welded together by laser, layer-by-layer.
This rapidly developing technology opens many possibilities, from bespoke replacement body parts and prosthetics, to being able to share 3D files on the internet and print them out. It seem like science fiction, but it’s on the cusp of becoming science fact…
The technology of course has also opened up a lot of new possibilities in art…
The exhibition at the Phoenix will be open 16 Nov – 19 Jan
Entry is FREE!
